The Elysian Singers - Israel to Egypt
The Elysian Singers and Players bring you Handel’s choral showpiece Israel in Egypt, which was for many years second only to Messiah in popularity, owing no doubt to the dramatic choral and solo writing characteristic of a supreme master of the stage. Plagues of flies, frogs, hailstones, locusts and blisters; the parting of the Red Sea; and the Israelites’ miraculous escape as the Pharaoh’s horsemen and chariots are ‘thrown into the sea’. Truly a biblical epic not to be missed!

Collegium Musicum of London Chamber Choir – The Romantics
In the nineteenth century, Romanticism in music was characterised by an emphasis on emotional expression, individualism and freedom from the formal restraints of the Classical period. Composers explored a wider range of emotions, experimented with harmony and instrumentation, and drew inspiration from literature, nature and folklore.
Collegium Musicum of London’s summer concert features the work of three pioneers of the Romantic period: Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) and Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), all of whom left a rich legacy of exquisite choral music.
From Schubert’s wide-ranging output, the choir performs a selection of his gracefully subtle part-songs and his sublime setting of Psalm 23.
Psalm texts inspired Mendelssohn throughout his composing career. In 1837, Robert Schumann judged Mendelssohn’s setting of Psalm 42 as “the highest level that he has achieved as a composer of church music, indeed the highest level that modern church music has ever reached”. Mendelssohn’s Hear My Prayer for solo soprano and choir (1844), which features the perennial crowd-pleaser O for the Wings of a Dove, sets words from Psalm 55.
Nänie, Brahms’s moving musical lamentation, sets to music words by the German playwright and poet Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805), whose Ode To Joy was famously adapted by Beethoven for the last movement of his ninth symphony.
Join Collegium Musicum of London Chamber Choir and its talented conductor Greg Morris for what promises to be a memorable summer’s evening of inspired music-making.

Cantus Ensemble presents: Stabat Mater
Cantus Ensemble presents: Stabat Mater
The Cantus Ensemble performs Scarlatti's Stabat Mater and J.S. Bach's Jesu meine Freude, along with motets by MacMillan and Purcell.
Join the Cantus Ensemble for a performance of two powerful works that both explore faith, suffering, and redemption. Bach’s Jesu, meine Freude celebrates the joy and comfort found in Christ, underpinned by some of the composer's most intricate choral writing and textual illustration. By contrast, Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater delves into the sorrow of Mary at the cross, and is a profound reflection of the human experience of grief and hope.
Henry Purcell's increasingly declamatory Hear my prayer, O Lord opens the concert, while selections from James MacMillan's The Strathclyde Motets offer an entirely different musical experience by way of the Scottish composer's idiomatic use of folk-like rhythms and sumptuous harmonies.

Henry Purcell Hear my prayer, O Lord
James MacMillan Strathclyde Motets (selections)
J.S. Bach Jesu meine Freude
